There was little doubt that, once the
Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport (XNA) opened for business in late 1998, it
would be a success. However no one anticipated the success arriving so soon.
Instead of adding one carrier a quarter, the spectacular airport added four in
its first five months of operation. Regional jet service with direct flights to
Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago and Memphis is just the start of big things to come
for this gleaming jewel. American Eagle, Delta ASA, Trans World Express and
Northwest Airlink have helped make the opening of the Northwest Arkansas
Regional Airport a rousing success. American Eagle was the initial tenant of
XNA, as the airport is known to airlines throughout the nation. With daily
regional jet service direct to Dallas and Chicago, the airline has experienced
tremendous growth at the new airport.
Next for
the facility will be a highway connecting the airport's south entrance to the
I540 and Wagon Wheel Road interchange north of Springdale. The airport
authority will receive $16 million from the federal government to use toward
construction of the connector road.
Northwest Arkansas is home to some of the world's most successful
companies, such as Wal-Mart, Inc; Tyson Foods, Inc.; and J.B. Hunt Transport,
Inc. Over the past 10 years, the growth in commercial air travel in the region
has been phenomenal -- an annual compounded rate of 12 percent, which is almost
three times the national average.
The
recent opening of interstate 540 from Alma (I40) has improved travel to the
area by land. Now the area has interstate quality roads from the Missouri
border to Interstate 40 and from I540 to Tulsa.
